The streaming wars are on, and it’s no surprise that Netflix came out of 2020 on top, with 36M new subscribers joining its service last year — which brought its worldwide total to 200M subscribers by the end of Q4. The largest surge in sign-ups occurred during the spring lockdown and at the end of the year.

  • This was a record result for Netflix, however, as the previous two years only saw the platform’s subscriber numbers increase by slightly over 25M year over year, and by only about 20M in 2017
  • Rounding closely behind Netflix, Prime Video currently has over 150M subscribers, and saw a 17% increase in the US in 2020
  • Disney+ started this year with 94.9M subscribers, gaining a whopping 64.8M subscribers in 2020 alone (18% growth in the US) and showing no signs of stopping

In China, Tencent Video, iQIYI and Youku are in the top 6, with the first two having approximately 120M subscribers each, and Youku ca. 90M.
